The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (“CIPO”) has announced a substantive increase in most of the official filing fees beginning January 1, 2024 in connection with all types of intellectual property.

CIPO notes that it has not substantially increased its fees since 2004 and the fee increase is intended to help with improving its services and as an inflation adjustment.  We expect at least some of these increased fees will go to the training of the approximately 100 new examiners that have been hired by CIPO to clear out its significant backlog of unexamined applications, which could reduce the lengthy wait times applicants now face.
